Alberta’s Interactive Media Industry to Add $169M to GDP by 2030 by Digi Media Matters

Alberta’s interactive digital media (IDM) industry is to contribute $169 million to the province’s GDP by 2030, according to a new report by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC). The study, Virtual Frontiers, positions IDM as a driver of Alberta’s economic future.

A Booming Industry

The IDM sector encompasses video games, animation, visual effects, and more. Alberta, home to 177 studios, has seen rapid growth in this sector, with a surge in demand for tech talent.

Key findings from the report reveal that tech employment in IDM is expected to outpace Alberta’s overall economic growth. While wages remain competitive with other Canadian tech hubs like Toronto and Vancouver, attracting and retaining mid-to-senior talent remains a challenge.

Opportunities and Challenges

Although Alberta’s IDM industry is on the rise, a potential talent shortage threatens its growth. Without incentives to retain skilled workers, Alberta could lose its top talent to larger markets. However, with strategic interventions, the province is well-positioned to succeed.

Namir Anani, President and CEO of ICTC, emphasized Alberta’s potential, stating, “The growth of Alberta’s IDM industry is not just a local success story but a significant contributor to Canada’s broader digital landscape.”

Driving Innovation

Interactive digital media is becoming an economic force, and Alberta’s studios are utilizing the province’s strengths in sectors like energy, manufacturing, and healthcare. Digital Alberta’s Executive Director, Alecia Peters, shared her optimism: “Creative technologies are not only entertaining billions globally but are transforming primary industries, many of which are headquartered in Alberta.”

The Future of IDM in Alberta

As Alberta continues to invest in the digital media era, the potential for job creation and innovation is immense. With the right policies, the industry’s growth will contribute to GDP and position Alberta as a leader in interactive digital media.
